Fondé par Franz Anton Mesmer, le magnétisme animal est une pratique thérapeutique ancrée sur l’idée de l’existence d’un fluide universel présent dans le cosmos mais aussi dans le corps humain, et dont le thérapeute doit rétablir la circulation pour restaurer la santé. D’emblée, cette conception investit d’autres domaines de la vie sociale, politique et culturelle. Elle agit comme un prisme de leurs recompositions en-deçà et par-delà les révolutions, alors qu’elle évoluait et s’étendait de la France à l’Europe et au monde.
David Armando, Bruno Belhoste, Jean-Luc Chappey et Claire Gantet travaillent ensemble au programme de recherche collaborative Harmonia Universalis. Du mouvement mesmériste à l’internationale magnétiste.
Founded by Franz Anton Mesmer, animal magnetism is a therapeutic practice rooted in the idea of the existence of a universal fluid, present not only in the cosmos but also in the human body, whose circulation the therapist must restore in order to restore health. From the beginning, this conception permeated other areas of social, political and cultural life. It acted as a prism for their recomposition, both before and after the revolutions, when it evolved itself and spread from France to Europe and the World.
David Armando, Bruno Belhoste, Jean-Luc Chappey, and Claire Gantet work together within the Harmonia Universalis collaborative research programme, devoted to the history of mesmerism and animal magnetism.
