Ce dictionnaire en deux volumes constitue un outil de référence pour appréhender les différentes facettes de l'ésotérisme occidental. Il se compose d'un ensemble d'environ 400 notices sur les personnages clés de la tradition et sur les grands thèmes qui la constituent : gnosticisme, hermétisme, astrologie, alchimie, magie, rosicrucianisme, maçonnerie, illuminisme, théosophie, occultisme, new-age. Ces notices sont l'œuvre de quelques 180 universitaires européens, sélectionnés et dirigés par Wouter J. Hannegraaff, en collaboration avec Antoine Faivre, Roelof van den Broeck et Jean-Pierre Brach. Même si quelques textes souffrent d'imprécisions, notamment en ce qui concerne les caractéristiques de certains mouvements initiatiques contemporains (par exemple le rosicrucianisme), l'ensemble est d'excellente facture.

Ce dictionnaire complète le Dictionnaire critique de l'ésotérisme publié il y a quelques années par les éditions PUF. Il intéressera particulièrement les passionnés de l'illuminisme, car il contient de nombreuses notices en relation avec des personnages ou des thèmes de cette période importante dans l'histoire des idées (voir la liste dans le sommaire ci-dessous). Chacune d'elles propose une biographie, une présentation des idées, ainsi qu'une bibliographie des auteurs retenus.

Notons que le second volume comporte un long article sur Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin, rédigé par Arthur McCalla, professeur à Mount Saint-Vincent University (Halifax, Canada), et divisé en sept parties (p. 1024-1031) :

Sans être d'une grande originalité, cette notice reste d'une bonne tenue.

L'intérêt de ce Dictionary est aussi de présenter des notices sur l'illuminisme (par Christine Bergé) et le martinisme du XVIIIe siècle (par Jean-François Var, également auteur des textes sur Martinès de Pasqually et Jean-Baptiste Willermoz). La notice sur Jacob Boehme est signée Arthus Versluis, également auteur de celles sur Franz von Baader, Johann Georg Gichtel, Jane Lead et William Law. Les amis de Saint-Martin, tels Kirchberger (par Antoine Faivre), Saltzmann (par Jules Keller), la duchesse de Bourbon (par Karen-Claire Voss) et Jung-Stilling (par Jacques Fabry), ne sont pas négligés. Enfin, de nombreux théosophes sont honorés d'une notice (voir la liste indicative dans le sommaire ci-dessous).

Wouter J. Hanegraaff is Professor of History of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He has published extensively on modern and contemporary Western esotericism, including a book devoted to the 15th-century Christian Hermetist Lodovico Lazzarelli and a monograph on the New Age movement.
Antoine Faivre is Professor Emeritus of History of Esoteric and Mystical Currents in Modern and Contemporary Europe at the 5th section of the École Pratique des Hautes Études (Sorbonne), Paris, France.
Roelof van den Broek is Professor Emeritus of History of Christianity at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands.
Jean-Pierre Brach is Professor of History of Esoteric Currents in Modern and Contemporary Europe at the 5th section of the École Pratique des Hautes Études (Sorbonne), Paris, France
